(ur. 1916), wybitny etolog hol., studiował biologię na uniwersytecie w Lejdzie,
gdzie w 1941 uzyskał dokotrat na podstawie głębokiej i szerokiej pracy o
orientacji przestrzennej, seksualnej i zachowaniu rozrodczym szczerkliny
piaskowej, 1940-1941 był asystentem na tymże uniwersytecie, 1941-1946 pracował
jako biolog w Królewskim Instytucie Badań Naukowych, od 1946 do emerytury był
profesorem uniwersytetu w Gronigen [wym.: Hroninhen]. Oprócz prac
eksperymentalnych szczególnie zasłużył się nauce jako jeden z najwybitniejszych
teoretyków biologii, który twórczo rozwinął tinbergenowską teorię instynktu; w
szczególności zwrócił uwagę na fakt, że zwierzę
dysponuje jakby pulą potencjalnych
działań, z których niektóre mogą być
wykorzystywane w fazie apetencyjnej przez różne instynkty; por.
